This Renaissance house belonged to an ancient noble family and one of the most illustrious of Lucca, the Diodati. Indeed the Villa is one of the most important examples of Lucchese residential architecture of the 16th century. Conceived as a summer retreat, the complex includes formal gardens, a chapel, lemon greenhouse (now the pool house) and stables. The location at the foot of the Colli Pizzorne hills was chosen due to the abundance of water necessary for the numerous water features which played an integral part in the decoration of such summer retreats. Certainly one of the most remarkable features of this property is the Cascade which graces the back garden and feeds the series of basin fountains both in front of and behind the villa.
Near the great museum properties of Villa Reale, Villa Torrigiani and Villa Grabau, this house is one of the few of such caliber still in private hands. The owner, has possessed it for more than three decades and keeps it as a primary residence. Decorative fountains, expansive parterres and the opulent ball room are testimony to the original function as a venue for elaborate entertaining. It has been kept very close to its original structure. The enormous carpet in the ball room is notable as are the frescoes.
